Background of the study
Morphosyntactic patterns in Nigerian digital communication are evolving rapidly as users adapt traditional grammar to suit online contexts. This study compares the morphosyntactic features present in Facebook posts and Instagram captions, two platforms that foster distinct communication styles. Facebook often encourages extended narratives with complex sentence structures, while Instagram promotes brevity and visual emphasis, leading to innovative syntactic constructions and morphological adjustments (Okeke, 2023). Nigerian users blend indigenous linguistic influences with standard English forms, resulting in unique hybrid structures that challenge conventional grammar. The research examines phenomena such as codemixing, truncation, and creative punctuation, aiming to uncover how digital environments influence language structure. By comparing Facebook and Instagram, the study highlights platform-specific differences and shared trends in morphosyntactic innovation, reflecting broader cultural and communicative shifts in Nigeria (Ibrahim, 2024). This comparative analysis will contribute to our understanding of digital language evolution and inform educational and media practices.
Statement of the problem
Existing research on Nigerian digital communication rarely compares morphosyntactic patterns across multiple platforms. Studies focusing on single platforms do not capture the diversity of language use influenced by different digital affordances. This limitation hinders a comprehensive understanding of how online environments drive syntactic and morphological change. The study aims to fill this gap by comparing Facebook and Instagram, thereby revealing the mechanisms behind morphosyntactic innovation in Nigerian digital discourse (Chukwu, 2024).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it offers a comparative analysis of morphosyntactic patterns in Nigerian digital communication, informing theories of language change and providing practical insights for educators and media practitioners (Ibrahim, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses on Nigerian digital communication on Facebook and Instagram and is limited to morphosyntactic analysis without addressing other linguistic dimensions.
