Background of the study
Pragmatic markers—words or phrases that help manage conversation and convey attitudes—are crucial elements in digital communication. In Nigerian online discourse, platforms like WhatsApp and Twitter exhibit unique pragmatic marker usage that reflects cultural nuances and communicative intent (Ibrahim, 2024). WhatsApp messages often include colloquial markers and emojis to express tone and emotion in private conversations, while Twitter’s concise format necessitates strategic use of markers to manage brevity and emphasis. These markers serve to regulate conversation flow, indicate politeness, and provide cues for interpretation. The study examines how pragmatic markers function in both settings, comparing their frequency, forms, and pragmatic roles. By understanding the differential use of these markers, the research aims to reveal how digital communication shapes social interaction and identity in Nigerian contexts (Okeke, 2023). This exploration contributes to a broader understanding of the subtle yet powerful role of pragmatics in online language use and cultural expression.

Statement of the problem
Although pragmatic markers are integral to effective online communication, there is limited research comparing their usage across different Nigerian social media platforms. Existing studies tend to focus on a single platform, thus failing to capture the nuances between private and public digital interactions. This research addresses this gap by evaluating the pragmatic markers used in WhatsApp and Twitter, shedding light on how these elements influence meaning and interaction in digital discourse (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To identify common pragmatic markers in Nigerian WhatsApp and Twitter communications.
  2. To compare the usage patterns of these markers across platforms.
  3. To assess the role of pragmatic markers in enhancing online discourse.

Research questions

  1. What pragmatic markers are predominantly used on WhatsApp and Twitter?
  2. How do their usages differ between the two platforms?
  3. What impact do these markers have on digital communication in Nigeria?

Significance of the study
This study provides insights into the role of pragmatic markers in Nigerian digital communication, offering valuable information for linguists and media professionals. The findings will enhance our understanding of conversational management in online contexts (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses on pragmatic markers in WhatsApp and Twitter communications within Nigerian digital discourse and does not extend to other platforms or offline interactions.

Definitions of terms

  • Pragmatic Marker: A word or phrase used to manage conversation and express attitude.
  • WhatsApp: A messaging application used for private communication.
