Background of the study
Pragmatic markers—words or phrases that help manage conversation and convey attitudes—are crucial elements in digital communication. In Nigerian online discourse, platforms like WhatsApp and Twitter exhibit unique pragmatic marker usage that reflects cultural nuances and communicative intent (Ibrahim, 2024). WhatsApp messages often include colloquial markers and emojis to express tone and emotion in private conversations, while Twitter’s concise format necessitates strategic use of markers to manage brevity and emphasis. These markers serve to regulate conversation flow, indicate politeness, and provide cues for interpretation. The study examines how pragmatic markers function in both settings, comparing their frequency, forms, and pragmatic roles. By understanding the differential use of these markers, the research aims to reveal how digital communication shapes social interaction and identity in Nigerian contexts (Okeke, 2023). This exploration contributes to a broader understanding of the subtle yet powerful role of pragmatics in online language use and cultural expression.
Statement of the problem
Although pragmatic markers are integral to effective online communication, there is limited research comparing their usage across different Nigerian social media platforms. Existing studies tend to focus on a single platform, thus failing to capture the nuances between private and public digital interactions. This research addresses this gap by evaluating the pragmatic markers used in WhatsApp and Twitter, shedding light on how these elements influence meaning and interaction in digital discourse (Chukwu, 2024).
