Background of the study
Instagram has emerged as a vibrant arena for linguistic creativity in Nigeria, particularly through the language of memes. Memes combine humor, imagery, and text to create a dynamic form of digital expression that rapidly evolves with cultural trends (Okafor, 2023). This study examines the linguistic trends evident in Instagram meme language, focusing on how users employ creative wordplay, abbreviations, and neologisms to communicate ideas succinctly. The ephemeral nature of memes encourages constant innovation, with language reflecting both traditional cultural references and contemporary global influences (Ibrahim, 2024). As meme language evolves, it serves as a mirror for societal values and issues, offering insights into the shifting linguistic landscape among Nigerian youth and digital communities. The study will explore how meme language functions as a tool for social commentary and identity formation, highlighting its role in driving broader linguistic trends within online discourse (Afolabi, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Although Instagram memes are recognized for their linguistic creativity, there is limited systematic research on the trends that underpin meme language in Nigeria. Existing studies often focus on visual elements rather than analyzing the textual innovations that drive cultural expression. This gap in research prevents a comprehensive understanding of how meme language contributes to broader online linguistic trends and impacts everyday communication. The study aims to address this deficiency by investigating the patterns and processes that define meme language in Nigerian digital discourse (Chukwu, 2024).
