Background of the study
Digital visual narratives, particularly through Instagram Story captions, have introduced novel ways of constructing meaning and language in Nigeria. These captions, which accompany visual content, combine creative storytelling with linguistic experimentation, leading to unique morphosyntactic patterns (Okafor, 2023). Instagram Story captions often employ abbreviated forms, unconventional punctuation, and creative syntax to capture attention and convey nuanced emotions. The integration of text with visual elements fosters a hybrid form of communication that challenges traditional grammatical structures (Ibrahim, 2024). This study explores how digital visual narratives impact morphosyntax by examining Instagram Story captions, highlighting how users adapt language to suit the ephemeral and dynamic nature of social media. The research investigates the interplay between visual cues and textual expression, considering how cultural, social, and technological factors drive linguistic innovation in Nigerian digital contexts (Afolabi, 2023). By analyzing these narratives, the study aims to document the evolution of morphosyntactic patterns and assess their broader implications for contemporary language use.
Statement of the problem
Despite the growing importance of Instagram Story captions in digital storytelling, there is limited research on their impact on morphosyntactic structures in Nigerian online communication. Current studies often focus on visual aesthetics or isolated linguistic features, neglecting the complex interplay between visual narratives and language structure (Chukwu, 2024). This gap hinders a comprehensive understanding of how digital visual narratives foster morphosyntactic innovation. The study aims to address this gap by systematically analyzing Instagram Story captions to uncover the underlying patterns and the factors that drive these linguistic transformations (Okafor, 2023).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the transformative impact of digital visual narratives on Nigerian morphosyntax. The insights derived will enhance our understanding of hybrid language practices in digital media, providing valuable guidance for educators, linguists, and digital content creators (Okafor, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study focuses exclusively on Instagram Story captions within Nigerian digital discourse. It is limited to the analysis of morphosyntactic patterns in this specific medium and does not extend to other forms of digital or offline communication.
