Background of the study
Morphosyntactic variation in social media is a dynamic reflection of language evolution in digital spaces. In Nigeria, Twitter threads provide a rich corpus for analyzing how morphological and syntactic structures are adapted in online discourse. This study investigates the interplay between morphology and syntax in Twitter threads, where users often modify standard language norms to express identity, humor, or political dissent (Okeke, 2023). The informal and interactive nature of Twitter encourages innovative constructions such as abbreviated word forms, unconventional punctuation, and creative sentence structures. Such variations are influenced by factors including regional dialects, digital culture, and the rapid pace of online communication (Ibrahim, 2024). By comparing threads across different thematic contexts, the research aims to reveal the mechanisms behind these morphosyntactic shifts and assess their implications for traditional language theories. The study also considers how digital literacy and social trends contribute to the evolution of language in Nigerian online communities (Afolabi, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Although morphosyntactic variation is observable in Nigerian Twitter threads, there is limited research that systematically analyzes these changes. Existing studies have focused on isolated instances of language modification rather than offering a comparative analysis of morphosyntactic patterns across threads (Chukwu, 2024). This gap prevents a comprehensive understanding of how digital communication influences both morphology and syntax simultaneously. The study aims to address this limitation by examining Twitter threads as a whole, identifying patterns, and exploring the socio-cultural factors driving these variations. This investigation is crucial for updating linguistic models to better accommodate digital language practices (Okeke, 2023).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a detailed comparative analysis of morphosyntactic variation in Nigerian Twitter threads. The findings will enhance understanding of digital language evolution and inform contemporary linguistic theories and educational practices (Okeke, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study focuses exclusively on Nigerian Twitter threads, analyzing morphosyntactic variation in digital posts. It is limited to Twitter and does not consider other social media platforms or offline language use.
