Background of the study
Digital discourse on social media platforms is reshaping semantic networks by altering how meanings are constructed and communicated. In Nigeria, platforms like Facebook and Twitter serve as crucial arenas for semantic innovation, where language evolves through user interactions, shared content, and cultural exchanges (Adeniyi, 2023). This study examines how digital discourse on these platforms influences semantic networks, revealing how traditional meanings are challenged and redefined. Facebook users often engage in extended discussions that incorporate narrative storytelling and personal experiences, while Twitter’s concise format promotes rapid, context-dependent exchanges. These differences result in distinct semantic trajectories, as users negotiate meanings through hashtags, emojis, and colloquial expressions (Ibrahim, 2024). The study investigates the comparative impact of these platforms on the formation and transformation of semantic networks, highlighting the dynamic relationship between digital media and language evolution. It further explores how socio-cultural factors, digital literacy, and online community practices contribute to semantic change in Nigeria (Okafor, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite the growing importance of digital discourse in shaping semantic networks, research on how Nigerian users construct and transform meaning on platforms like Facebook and Twitter remains limited. Existing studies have primarily focused on either platform in isolation, failing to provide a comparative analysis of their semantic impacts (Chukwu, 2024). This lack of integrated research restricts our understanding of how different digital environments influence semantic evolution. The study aims to address these shortcomings by analyzing the semantic structures in digital discourse across Facebook and Twitter, examining the interplay between platform-specific features and meaning-making processes. The dearth of empirical data on these phenomena hampers efforts to develop comprehensive models of digital semantic networks (Afolabi, 2023).
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it offers a comparative analysis of semantic networks on two major social media platforms in Nigeria. The findings will enhance our understanding of digital meaning-making processes, providing insights beneficial to linguists, media analysts, and digital communication strategists (Adeniyi, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study is confined to the analysis of semantic networks in Nigerian digital discourse on Facebook and Twitter. It does not extend to other platforms or offline communication.
