Background of the study
Pragmatic markers are essential in conveying tone, intent, and relational meaning in digital communication. In Nigerian social media, particularly on Facebook and Twitter, these markers play a pivotal role in shaping interpersonal interactions. This study investigates the use and evolution of online pragmatic markers in Nigerian digital discourse. Users employ markers such as interjections, discourse particles, and emoticons to negotiate politeness, manage conversation flow, and express affect (Adebisi, 2023). The informal and spontaneous nature of online exchanges has led to the creative adaptation of pragmatic markers, which differ from their traditional spoken counterparts (Ibrahim, 2024). By examining Facebook posts and Twitter tweets, this research explores how digital communication practices influence the use of pragmatic markers. The study also considers how these markers contribute to the overall meaning and effectiveness of online communication, reflecting both cultural nuances and technological affordances (Okoro, 2023). Through systematic analysis, the research aims to illuminate the mechanisms behind pragmatic marker innovation and its implications for Nigerian digital communication (Chukwu, 2024).
Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized importance of pragmatic markers in communication, there is a scarcity of research focusing on their usage in Nigerian social media contexts. Existing studies have predominantly concentrated on lexical or syntactic elements, neglecting how pragmatic markers shape online interaction. This research seeks to address the gap by examining the role and evolution of pragmatic markers in Facebook and Twitter posts. The lack of comprehensive data on this subject limits our understanding of how digital communication practices affect conversational nuances and relational dynamics in Nigerian online communities (Afolabi, 2024).

Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it sheds light on the often-overlooked area of pragmatic markers in Nigerian social media. The findings will contribute to a deeper understanding of digital communication practices and inform both academic research and practical applications in online discourse analysis (Okafor, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
This study focuses exclusively on the use of pragmatic markers in Facebook and Twitter posts within Nigerian digital discourse. It does not cover other social media platforms or offline communication practices.
