Background of the study
Viral hashtags on Twitter have significantly influenced morphosyntactic patterns in Nigerian digital discourse. The rapid proliferation of these hashtags often leads to the creation of new linguistic forms and alters established grammatical structures (Olufemi, 2023). This study explores how viral hashtags, through their widespread use and inherent creativity, serve as catalysts for morphosyntactic change among Nigerian netizens. Twitter neologisms emerging from these hashtags illustrate how digital communication disrupts traditional language conventions by introducing innovative word formations, syntactic variations, and novel morphological constructs (Adebayo, 2024). The study also highlights the role of social media in democratizing language change, as users collectively shape linguistic norms in an informal, yet influential, digital environment. Furthermore, the research investigates the socio-cultural factors that contribute to these changes, examining how public sentiment and online trends interact to reshape language (Chinonso, 2023). By providing a detailed analysis of Twitter neologisms, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of the interplay between digital trends and language evolution in Nigeria, offering theoretical insights and practical implications for future linguistic research (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the problem
While viral hashtags have become integral to digital communication in Nigeria, their impact on morphosyntactic patterns remains underexplored. The emergence of neologisms through these hashtags poses challenges to traditional grammatical frameworks, yet empirical studies examining these changes are limited (Okoro, 2023). There is an evident need to investigate how the rapid spread of viral hashtags influences sentence structure, word formation, and overall language conventions. This study aims to bridge the gap by systematically analyzing Twitter neologisms and their effects on Nigerian morphosyntax. The lack of comprehensive data on this phenomenon hampers our understanding of contemporary language evolution, necessitating a critical investigation into the underlying mechanisms driving these changes (Akinyele, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To assess the influence of viral hashtags on Nigerian morphosyntactic patterns.
  2. To analyze the formation of Twitter neologisms and their linguistic characteristics.
  3. To evaluate the broader implications of these changes for Nigerian language structure.

Research questions

  1. How do viral hashtags affect morphosyntactic patterns in Nigerian digital discourse?
  2. What are the key features of Twitter neologisms that influence language structure?
  3. How do these morphosyntactic changes reflect broader cultural and social trends in Nigeria?

Significance of the study
This research is significant as it examines the transformative effects of viral hashtags on Nigerian language structures, particularly morphosyntax. The findings will advance our understanding of digital linguistic innovation and provide crucial insights for linguists, educators, and policymakers. By exploring Twitter neologisms, the study contributes to broader discussions on language evolution in the digital era (Balogun, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is confined to the analysis of viral hashtags and their impact on morphosyntactic patterns in Nigerian digital discourse on Twitter. It does not extend to other social media platforms or offline language practices.
