Background of the study
Social media platforms have become instrumental in shaping linguistic identity in Nigeria, where language use is evolving through digital interactions. This study investigates how Instagram and WhatsApp contribute to the construction and transformation of Nigerian linguistic identity. Instagram, with its emphasis on visual content and creative captions, encourages users to adopt innovative language practices that blend traditional linguistic elements with modern digital trends (Nwankwo, 2023). In contrast, WhatsApp facilitates intimate, real-time communication, where language is often adapted to suit informal, conversational contexts (Chukwu, 2024). The comparative analysis examines how these platforms influence language practices, such as code-switching, slang creation, and the integration of local dialects, thus shaping individual and collective identities. The research underscores the role of digital media in redefining language boundaries and cultural expressions, providing insight into how technology mediates linguistic evolution (Afolabi, 2023). Statement of the problem
There is a notable gap in the literature concerning the comparative impact of different social media platforms on Nigerian linguistic identity.
