Background of the study
Online neologisms have emerged as a defining feature of Nigerian digital discourse, particularly within meme culture on Facebook and Twitter. The creation of new words and expressions reflects the dynamic and innovative nature of online communication, where linguistic creativity is continuously evolving (Ogun, 2023). Memes serve as fertile grounds for the development of neologisms, as users repurpose traditional language elements to convey humor, satire, and socio-political commentary (Adebisi, 2024). This study investigates the mechanisms behind the formation and spread of neologisms in Nigerian digital communities, focusing on the role of memes as catalysts for language change. The research explores how these newly coined expressions interact with existing linguistic frameworks and the extent to which they influence everyday communication (Eze, 2023). Furthermore, the study examines the cultural and social factors that drive the acceptance and proliferation of neologisms, thereby offering insights into the broader implications of digital language innovation. By analyzing Facebook and Twitter memes, the study highlights the interplay between digital creativity and language evolution in a rapidly changing socio-cultural landscape (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite the prevalence of online neologisms in Nigerian digital spaces, there remains a limited understanding of how these new expressions emerge and gain traction in meme culture. Current literature has yet to fully address the factors that facilitate the creation and dissemination of neologisms on platforms like Facebook and Twitter (Chinwe, 2023). This research seeks to fill this gap by investigating the processes underlying neologism formation and their impact on digital discourse. The absence of a comprehensive framework for analyzing these linguistic innovations complicates efforts to understand their role in reflecting and shaping cultural identities. This study aims to critically examine the factors that contribute to the evolution of language through digital memes, thereby providing valuable insights into the intersection of technology, culture, and language (Okafor, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To identify and analyze the formation of neologisms in Nigerian digital discourse.
  2. To examine the role of memes on Facebook and Twitter in facilitating linguistic innovation.
  3. To evaluate the impact of online neologisms on broader language use in Nigeria.

Research questions

  1. What are the primary mechanisms behind the creation of online neologisms in Nigerian meme culture?
  2. How do Facebook and Twitter differ in their influence on neologism proliferation?
  3. What is the impact of these neologisms on traditional language practices in Nigeria?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the cutting edge of language evolution in digital spaces through the lens of online neologisms. By examining meme culture on Facebook and Twitter, the research provides critical insights into how digital creativity drives linguistic change. The findings will benefit linguists, cultural theorists, and digital media practitioners, contributing to a more nuanced understanding of contemporary language practices (Balogun, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses on the emergence and impact of online neologisms within Nigerian digital discourse as seen in Facebook and Twitter memes. It is limited to analyzing meme culture and does not encompass other forms of online communication or offline language practices.

Definitions of terms

  • Meme Culture: The phenomenon of creating and sharing humorous or culturally significant content online.
