Background of the study
Facebook groups in Nigeria have emerged as pivotal spaces for collective dialogue and community building, offering unique insights into evolving syntactic patterns. This study examines how the language used in these groups reflects shifts in syntax, influenced by informal digital communication practices. Nigerian users often adopt a conversational tone, blending indigenous linguistic structures with English, leading to distinctive syntactic phenomena (Balogun, 2023). These patterns include the innovative use of sentence structures, code-switching, and the incorporation of local idiomatic expressions, all of which are reshaping traditional syntax (Adamu, 2024). The research underscores the importance of understanding how online group interactions facilitate linguistic experimentation and adaptation, particularly in contexts where social media plays a central role in information dissemination and community engagement (Ibrahim, 2023). Moreover, the study explores the implications of these syntactic shifts for broader linguistic theories, as digital communication challenges conventional notions of language norms and grammatical correctness (Oluwole, 2024). By analyzing language patterns within Facebook groups, this research aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the impact of digital media on language structure and usage in Nigeria, providing both theoretical and practical insights into modern communication trends.

Statement of the problem
Despite the widespread use of Facebook groups in Nigeria, there is limited research on how these digital interactions influence syntactic structures. The informal nature of group communication often leads to deviations from standard grammar, yet the extent and implications of these changes remain underexplored (Akinyemi, 2023). This gap in the literature hinders a comprehensive understanding of online language evolution and its impact on traditional syntax. Additionally, there is insufficient empirical data linking these linguistic shifts to broader social and cultural trends. The study seeks to address these gaps by systematically evaluating the syntactic patterns emerging in Nigerian Facebook groups, thereby providing a critical analysis of digital communication practices (Eze, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To evaluate the syntactic patterns emerging in Nigerian Facebook group language.
  2. To analyze the influence of informal online communication on traditional syntactic structures.
  3. To examine the correlation between digital communication practices and broader language evolution in Nigeria.

Research questions

  1. What syntactic innovations are observed in the language of Nigerian Facebook groups?
  2. How does informal digital communication affect traditional syntactic norms?
  3. What are the broader implications of these syntactic shifts for Nigerian language evolution?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the transformative influence of digital communication on traditional syntax. The findings will contribute to the academic discourse on sociolinguistics and digital media studies, offering new perspectives on language evolution. Insights from the research will inform educators, linguists, and media practitioners on the implications of online language use for broader communication trends and educational practices (Ajayi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses exclusively on language use within Nigerian Facebook groups. It is limited to syntactic analysis and does not address other linguistic components or offline communication practices. The research is confined to the specific dynamics of Facebook group interactions.
