Background of the study
Digital content platforms have become pivotal in shaping language and phonological practices among Nigerian users. TikTok and Instagram, particularly through their story features, have emerged as influential mediums for phonological variation and innovation. Nigerian users on TikTok often employ exaggerated intonation, altered stress patterns, and creative sound effects in lip‑sync and narrative videos, while Instagram Stories blend natural speech with digital enhancements (Ibrahim, 2023). This comparative study investigates how these platforms contribute to phonological variation by examining user‐generated content that reflects both traditional speech patterns and innovative digital modifications. As users experiment with audio filters, editing techniques, and stylistic presentations, new phonological norms are being established. These practices not only signal identity and cultural affiliation but also challenge conventional phonetic standards (Okafor, 2024). By analyzing a corpus of TikTok and Instagram Stories, the study aims to document these phonological variations and understand the factors driving their emergence, including digital affordances, audience feedback, and evolving communication norms (Chukwu, 2023). The findings will contribute to the broader field of sociophonetics and digital linguistics, offering insights into the dynamic interplay between technology and language evolution (Adebayo, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite the evident impact of digital platforms on speech, there is limited research on phonological variation within Nigerian TikTok and Instagram Stories. Current studies tend to emphasize visual and lexical aspects, neglecting the phonological changes that occur in user‐generated audio content (Ibrahim, 2023). This oversight creates a gap in understanding how digital media influences pronunciation and sound patterns, leaving the mechanisms of phonological innovation in these contexts underexplored (Okafor, 2024). Without targeted analysis, the implications for traditional phonetic norms remain ambiguous, necessitating a focused investigation.
Objectives of the study
Research questions
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of phonological variation in Nigerian digital content. The findings will inform linguists, educators, and digital media scholars by highlighting how technological innovations are reshaping phonetic norms and cultural expression (Adebayo, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study
The study is limited to analyzing phonological variation in TikTok and Instagram Stories among Nigerian users. It does not extend to other social media platforms or offline phonetic practices, ensuring a concentrated examination of the specified phenomenon.
