Background of the study
The phenomenon of code‑switching, the practice of alternating between languages or dialects within a single discourse, has become increasingly prominent in Nigerian digital communication. WhatsApp and Twitter, as two widely used platforms, offer unique contexts in which code‑switching can be observed. In Nigeria—a country characterized by multilingualism—digital platforms serve as critical sites for the interplay of indigenous languages and global lingua francas (Afolabi, 2023). WhatsApp conversations tend to be more private and conversational, often reflecting everyday bilingual or multilingual practices, whereas Twitter, with its public and concise format, promotes a different style of language mixing that is strategically employed to reach broader audiences (Okoro, 2024). This study examines how users navigate these platforms through code‑switching, revealing underlying cultural, social, and contextual factors that drive this linguistic behavior. The research investigates the motivations behind language alternation, the impact of digital communication constraints, and the broader implications for identity and social cohesion. Through comparative analysis, the study seeks to understand the extent to which digital affordances influence the frequency and style of code‑switching, ultimately providing insights into contemporary communication practices in Nigeria (Ibrahim, 2023).

Statement of the problem
While code‑switching is a well-documented linguistic practice in Nigeria, its manifestation in digital environments, particularly on platforms such as WhatsApp and Twitter, remains underexplored. Current literature tends to focus on traditional conversational settings rather than the dynamic, context-specific interactions online (Adebayo, 2023). This gap leaves a limited understanding of how digital communication mediates bilingual practices. Furthermore, without comparative studies that examine platform-specific influences, the nuanced differences in code‑switching behavior between private and public digital spaces remain inadequately addressed (Chukwu, 2024). Consequently, this study aims to fill the gap by providing a comprehensive analysis of code‑switching practices on WhatsApp and Twitter, thereby informing broader theories of multilingual communication in digital contexts.

Objectives of the study

  1. To compare code‑switching practices on WhatsApp and Twitter among Nigerian users.
  2. To identify factors that influence code‑switching in different digital contexts.
  3. To analyze the impact of code‑switching on digital identity and communication.

Research questions

  1. How does code‑switching manifest differently on WhatsApp compared to Twitter?
  2. What social and contextual factors drive code‑switching in these platforms?
  3. How does code‑switching affect digital identity and communication in Nigeria?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides a comparative analysis of code‑switching on two prominent digital platforms in Nigeria. Its findings will enrich our understanding of multilingual digital communication and inform educators, linguists, and communication strategists about effective language practices in diverse digital contexts (Afolabi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is confined to analyzing code‑switching practices on WhatsApp and Twitter among Nigerian users. It does not extend to other forms of digital communication or traditional face‑to‑face interactions, ensuring a focused examination of the specified phenomenon.

Definitions of terms

  • Code‑Switching: The practice of alternating between two or more languages or dialects in a conversation.
  • Digital Discourse: Communication through digital platforms.
  • Multilingualism: The use of multiple languages within a single context.
