Background of the study
TikTok’s rise as a digital storytelling platform has significantly influenced Nigerian pragmatic practices. Video narratives on TikTok do more than entertain; they serve as vehicles for conveying social norms, cultural values, and everyday pragmatic cues (Adebayo, 2023). Nigerian creators employ innovative narrative techniques that blend humor, irony, and local idioms to engage audiences while reflecting on social realities. These narratives challenge traditional forms of communication by using digital media affordances—such as short duration, visual effects, and background music—to reframe pragmatic interactions (Chukwu, 2024). The fusion of storytelling and pragmatic practice on TikTok mirrors broader shifts in communication where form and function converge in dynamic ways (Obi, 2023). As Nigerian users harness TikTok’s creative tools, they redefine how meaning is negotiated in public and private discourse. This phenomenon is particularly salient in the context of cultural identity, where digital narratives become a medium for both self-expression and social commentary. The study aims to document the evolving pragmatic practices influenced by TikTok narratives and to evaluate their impact on traditional Nigerian communication styles (Okafor, 2023). Through this investigation, the research contributes to the understanding of digital storytelling’s role in shaping pragmatic norms in a rapidly changing sociocultural landscape.
Statement of the problem
Although TikTok has become a popular medium for digital storytelling in Nigeria, its impact on pragmatic practices remains underexplored. Existing research has largely focused on visual and stylistic elements of TikTok videos, often neglecting how these narratives influence pragmatic aspects of communication (Adebayo, 2023). This gap leaves questions about the nature and extent of pragmatic shifts in Nigerian digital discourse unanswered. Without a comprehensive examination, it is challenging to understand the implications of these narrative practices on everyday interactions and cultural communication (Chukwu, 2024). Moreover, the evolving nature of digital storytelling requires updated empirical evidence to support theoretical models of pragmatics in digital contexts. This study addresses these issues by providing an in-depth analysis of TikTok video narratives and their effect on pragmatic practices among Nigerian users (Obi, 2023).
