Background of the Study
Hashtag campaigns on Twitter have emerged as powerful tools for social and political mobilization in Nigeria, generating not only semantic but also syntactic innovations. Users frequently repurpose hashtags to create neologisms that transform sentence structures and grammatical conventions. This study appraises how hashtag neologisms influence Nigerian syntax by analyzing Twitter campaigns that have gained viral traction. It explores the mechanisms behind the creation of new syntactic forms—such as sentence fragmentation, abbreviated structures, and code‑switched elements—triggered by hashtag usage. The research situates these innovations within the context of digital activism and collective identity formation, revealing how hashtags serve as catalysts for syntactic change. By integrating digital semiotics with syntactic theory, the study offers insights into the evolving nature of online language and its impact on traditional grammatical norms (Adeniyi, 2023; Okoro, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although hashtag campaigns are recognized for driving language change, there is limited research on their impact on syntactic structures in Nigerian digital discourse. Existing studies focus on lexical innovation, neglecting how hashtag neologisms alter sentence construction and grammatical conventions. This gap limits our understanding of how digital activism contributes to syntactic evolution. The study addresses this deficiency by examining Twitter hashtag campaigns, aiming to elucidate the processes through which new syntactic forms emerge and become normalized in online communication (Chukwu, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To analyze syntactic changes induced by hashtag neologisms on Twitter.
To identify the mechanisms behind syntactic innovation in hashtag campaigns.
To evaluate the impact of digital activism on Nigerian syntax.
Research Questions:
What syntactic innovations are associated with hashtag neologisms?
How do hashtag campaigns drive changes in sentence structure?
What role does digital activism play in these processes?
Significance of the Study
This study contributes to our understanding of how digital activism reshapes language by influencing syntactic structures. Its insights are valuable for linguists and digital media analysts interested in the intersection of social movements and language evolution (Adeniyi, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to Nigerian Twitter hashtag campaigns.
Definitions of Terms:
Hashtag Neologisms: New words or expressions formed using hashtags.
Syntax: The rules governing sentence structure.
Digital Activism: The use of digital platforms for social and political mobilization.
