Background of the Study
Code‑mixing, the blending of two or more languages in communication, is a prevalent feature in Nigerian social media. In Facebook groups, users frequently interweave indigenous languages with English, reflecting Nigeria's rich multilingualism and cultural diversity. This study investigates code‑mixing practices by analyzing posts and interactions in various Nigerian Facebook groups. It examines how group dynamics, audience diversity, and contextual factors drive the use of code‑mixing as a communicative strategy. The research explores the functional aspects of code‑mixing, including its role in identity construction, social bonding, and expressive creativity. By applying sociolinguistic theories of bilingual communication, the study aims to reveal the patterns and motivations underlying code‑mixing in digital environments, and to assess its impact on overall online discourse (Uzo, 2023; Ibrahim, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
While code‑mixing is widespread in Nigerian Facebook groups, there is limited research that systematically examines its structure and function in these digital contexts.
