Background of the Study
Hashtag campaigns have become pivotal in digital political movements, particularly on platforms like Twitter. In Nigeria, political hashtag campaigns serve not only as tools for mobilization but also as agents of syntactic innovation. Activists and citizens use hashtags to encapsulate complex political messages, often condensing traditional sentence structures into compact, impactful forms. These practices result in syntactic adaptations such as the omission of articles, rearranged word orders, and the integration of code‑switched elements. This study examines how digital political movements influence syntactic practices by comparing hashtag campaigns across different political contexts. It explores the ways in which the urgency and brevity of political discourse drive non‑standard syntax, reflecting both resistance to established language norms and the creative adaptation to digital communication constraints (Okoro, 2024). By situating these syntactic shifts within theories of political communication and digital discourse, the research provides a comprehensive understanding of how social media facilitates language change in political contexts (Adeniyi, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Although political hashtag campaigns are recognized for their influence on public discourse, little is known about their impact on syntax in Nigerian digital communication. Existing research tends to focus on the political and social implications of hashtags rather than their linguistic effects. This lack of attention to syntactic change limits our understanding of how digital political movements drive language innovation. This study seeks to address this gap by comparing the syntactic structures of hashtags from various political campaigns, thereby revealing the mechanisms through which digital activism influences non‑standard syntax (Chukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To compare syntactic patterns in political hashtag campaigns.

  • To analyze the impact of digital activism on language structure.

  • To develop a framework linking hashtag campaigns with syntactic innovation.

Research Questions:

  • What syntactic adaptations are evident in political hashtags?

  • How do hashtag campaigns influence sentence structure?

  • What digital factors drive these syntactic changes?

Significance of the Study
This study contributes to our understanding of digital political discourse by examining the syntactic impact of hashtag campaigns. Its findings are valuable for linguists, political analysts, and digital media strategists, highlighting how social media activism transforms language (Adeniyi, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Hashtag Campaigns: Coordinated digital movements using hashtags.

  2. Syntax: The rules governing sentence structure.

  3. Digital Political Movements: Social media-based political activism.
