Background of the Study
Semantic shifts, or changes in word meanings over time, are accelerated by the dynamic nature of digital communication. In Nigerian Twitter political debates, the rapid exchange of ideas often leads to the redefinition of key terms and expressions. Participants in these debates utilize rhetorical devices, cultural references, and code‑switching to negotiate meaning and influence public opinion (Ibrahim, 2023). This study investigates the semantic shifts that occur during political debates on Twitter by analyzing the evolution of language used in contentious discussions. The research explores how digital interactions and the platform’s structural constraints contribute to the emergence of new semantic fields, thereby reflecting broader socio-political changes in Nigerian society. By examining discourse from political debates, the study provides insights into the mechanisms of semantic innovation and the role of digital media in shaping public language. It also considers the impact of user engagement and the viral nature of political rhetoric on meaning transformation (Okoro, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although semantic shifts are observable in Nigerian Twitter political debates, there is limited research that systematically analyzes these changes. Current studies often focus on the political implications of debates without adequately addressing the linguistic transformations that occur. This lack of detailed examination of semantic shifts hampers our understanding of how political discourse drives language evolution in digital environments. The study aims to fill this gap by providing an empirical analysis of semantic changes during Twitter political debates, thereby clarifying the processes by which digital interactions reshape meaning (Chukwu, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To analyze semantic shifts in Nigerian Twitter political debates.
To identify factors that drive meaning transformation in digital discourse.
To develop a framework for understanding digital semantic evolution.
Research Questions:
What semantic shifts occur during political debates on Twitter?
How do digital interactions influence these shifts?
What are the broader implications for language evolution?
Significance of the Study
This study enhances our understanding of how political discourse in digital environments influences language evolution. Its findings are crucial for linguists and political communication scholars, providing insights into the relationship between digital interaction and semantic change (Ibrahim, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to Nigerian Twitter political debates.
Definitions of Terms:
Semantic Shifts: Changes in the meanings of words over time.
Twitter Political Debates: Online discussions on political issues on Twitter.
Digital Discourse: Communication on digital platforms.
