Background of the Study
Twitter audio memes, an emerging form of digital expression, have become instrumental in influencing phonological variation in Nigeria. These audio memes capture trending topics and transform them into vocal expressions that often incorporate innovative pronunciations, altered intonation patterns, and regionally influenced speech variations. As Nigerian users participate in trending discussions, they adapt their spoken language to fit the digital context, thereby generating phonological innovations that deviate from conventional norms (Ikechukwu, 2023). This study examines how trending topics on Twitter catalyze changes in phonological features through audio memes. It explores the interplay between digital trends, user creativity, and regional linguistic identity, highlighting the role of technological affordances in shaping spoken language. By analyzing a corpus of Twitter audio memes, the research aims to uncover patterns of phonetic modification and the socio-cultural factors that drive these changes. The findings will contribute to understanding the dynamic relationship between digital media and phonological evolution, revealing how virtual interactions can lead to tangible shifts in speech patterns (Okoro, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Although Twitter audio memes are gaining popularity as vehicles for linguistic expression, there is limited empirical research on their impact on phonological variation in Nigeria. Existing studies focus predominantly on textual content, neglecting the auditory dimensions of digital language innovation. This gap restricts our understanding of how trending topics influence speech patterns through digital media. This study addresses this deficiency by examining phonological changes evident in Twitter audio memes, aiming to provide a clearer picture of the mechanisms underlying digital phonetic innovation (Chukwu, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To analyze phonological variations in Twitter audio memes.
To identify the influence of trending topics on speech patterns.
To assess socio-cultural factors driving phonetic change.
Research Questions:
What phonological variations are present in Twitter audio memes?
How do trending topics affect these variations?
What cultural factors contribute to phonological innovation?
Significance of the Study
This study advances the understanding of digital phonology by examining how trending topics influence spoken language through audio memes. Its insights are crucial for linguists and media analysts studying the intersection of digital trends and phonetic change (Ikechukwu, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to Twitter audio memes and Nigerian discourse.
Definitions of Terms:
Phonological Variation: Differences in speech sound patterns.
