Background of the Study
Morphosyntax, the interface of morphology and syntax, is continually redefined in digital communication. Nigerian online group chats—on platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and specialized forums—exhibit morphosyntactic variations that reflect dynamic language practices in informal settings. This study appraises how group chats serve as incubators for linguistic innovation by facilitating the rapid evolution of word forms and sentence structures. Users in these digital communities frequently blend standard language with colloquial and code‑switched elements, creating hybrid morphosyntactic patterns that deviate from formal norms (Okeke, 2023). The research compares these patterns across different online group chats, analyzing factors such as group composition, contextual usage, and socio-cultural influences. By investigating the convergence of morphology and syntax in digital interactions, the study contributes to a broader understanding of how online discourse influences language evolution in Nigeria. It further examines how these innovations impact language teaching and standardization efforts in a rapidly digitizing society (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the Problem
Although online group chats in Nigeria are known for their creative language use, there is limited research on the morphosyntactic innovations that emerge from these interactions. Existing studies have predominantly focused on isolated elements of language, neglecting the integrated effects of morphology and syntax in digital discourse. This lack of comprehensive analysis limits our understanding of how group dynamics in online settings drive language change. The current study addresses this gap by conducting a comparative analysis of morphosyntactic features in Nigerian online group chats, thereby offering insights into the evolution of digital language practices (Chukwu, 2023).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To analyze morphosyntactic patterns in Nigerian online group chats.

  2. To compare these patterns across different digital platforms.

  3. To assess the implications of digital morphosyntax for language evolution.

Research Questions:

  1. What morphosyntactic innovations are present in online group chats?

  2. How do these innovations vary across platforms?

  3. What factors influence the development of digital morphosyntax?

Significance of the Study
This study enhances our understanding of the integrated evolution of morphology and syntax in digital communication. Its findings offer critical insights for linguists, educators, and communication strategists by highlighting the transformative impact of online discourse on language (Okeke, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Morphosyntax: The intersection of morphology and syntax in language.

  2. Online Group Chats: Digital forums where multiple users engage in real-time conversation.

  3. Digital Discourse: Communication practices conducted through electronic media.
