ABSTRACT
The study attempted to investigate the influence of adult education on family planing in Ikeja Local Government Area of Lagos State. The study also reviewed relevant and extensive literature under sub-headings. The descriptive research survey design was employed in this study in order to assess the opinions of the respondents with the application of questionnaire and the sampling technique. This study reveals that there will be an influence of adult education on family planning among couples. The findings also revealed that there are obviously not many difference between the family planning of those exposed to adult education and those who are not, however the few difference are: difference in marital health, difference in child survival and development, difference in the use of contraceptives, and difference in the number of children. And contraceptive pills, implants, injectables, patches, vaginal rings, intra uterine devices, condoms, lactational amenorrhea methods, male&female sterilization, withdrawal and fertility awareness based method among many others are the types of family planning and contraceptives. More so, contraceptives are effective in diverse way, among which include; effective in pregnancy prevention, effective in the reduction of pregnancy related morbidity and mortality, effective in the reduction of the risk in developing reproductive cancers and effective in the treatment of many menstrual related disorders etc. And the failure, demerits and side effects of some contraceptives as methods of family planning include; they result to nausea, they result to breast tenderness, they result to breakthrough bleeding, they result to amenorrhea, and oral contraceptives has the inability to provide protection from stds etc. Further more, there has been a huge problems revolving around as a result of family planning, however in other to handle some of those issues, the following can help; improvement of public awareness on the importance of family planning, educating the public on the various uses and functions of contraceptives and adequate availability of contraceptives. And adult educational programme will significantly influence family planning among couples. Additionally, the socio-economic status of couples will have a significant effect on their level of family planning. And religious belief of couples will have a significant relationship with their level of family planning. Lastly there will be a significant difference between the attitude of the educated couples towards family planning and those who are illiterates. Hence the researcher recommends that the scope of sex education should be structured to cover all aspects of individuals sex life considering the fact that some adolescents are naturally sexually active, hence should be implemented into adult education curriculum as well. And parents and older adults in the society should equally be educated in this regard to enable them uphold their responsibilities towards their children’s sexual development, to mention but a few
