Background of the Study
Digital language innovation is a hallmark of online forums, where creative expressions emerge rapidly through user interactions. Twitter memes in Nigeria serve as prime examples of how digital humor and visual cues drive linguistic innovation. Memes encapsulate complex ideas in a humorous format, blending images with text to produce new lexical items, idioms, and syntactic forms (Adeniyi, 2023). Nigerian users leverage memes to critique social issues, express cultural identity, and foster community solidarity. The rapid circulation of memes facilitates the diffusion of novel language practices, challenging traditional linguistic norms. This study appraises the innovative language practices embodied in Twitter memes by analyzing their structure, content, and cultural significance. The research situates these memes within broader theories of digital language change, highlighting how online humor serves as both a reflection and a catalyst of linguistic evolution (Okoro, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the widespread impact of Twitter memes on language innovation, there is limited research on their linguistic features and cultural implications in Nigeria. Existing studies often focus on the humor aspect of memes without addressing their role in driving lexical and syntactic innovation. This gap restricts our understanding of how digital platforms contribute to language evolution and the social dynamics underlying meme culture. This study aims to fill this gap by systematically analyzing Nigerian Twitter memes and evaluating their influence on digital language practices (Chukwu, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To analyze the linguistic features of Nigerian Twitter memes.
To assess the impact of memes on digital language innovation.
To explore the cultural significance of meme-driven language change.
Research Questions:
What innovative language features are present in Nigerian Twitter memes?
How do memes contribute to lexical and syntactic change?
What cultural factors underpin meme-driven language innovation?
