Background of the Study
Code-mixing, the blending of two or more languages in communication, is a prevalent phenomenon among Nigerian youth in digital spaces. This study examines code-mixing in social media posts, focusing on how young Nigerians navigate between indigenous languages and global lingua francas, such as English. The fluid linguistic boundaries in digital communication allow youth to express their cultural identity, social affiliations, and creativity through hybrid language practices (Uzo, 2023). Social media provides an ideal platform where code-mixing is not only a linguistic practice but also a socio-cultural marker. The study delves into how the interaction between languages in posts reflects broader trends of globalization and localization. It also investigates the role of digital media in normalizing code-mixing, thereby challenging traditional language policies and educational norms (Obi, 2024). By analyzing posts from various social media channels, the research aims to uncover the patterns and motivations behind code-mixing, offering insights into its implications for language development and identity among Nigerian youth.
Statement of the Problem
While code-mixing is widely observed in Nigerian youth communication online, there is limited systematic research examining its patterns and underlying motivations. Current literature often overlooks the intricate ways in which code-mixing shapes and reflects cultural identity in digital spaces. This gap hinders our understanding of the impact of hybrid language practices on language standardization and education. The study seeks to address this shortfall by providing an in-depth analysis of code-mixing in social media posts, focusing on its linguistic, cultural, and social dimensions (Chukwu, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To analyze patterns of code-mixing in Nigerian youth social media posts.
To explore the socio-cultural factors influencing code-mixing.
To assess the implications of code-mixing for language development.
Research Questions:
What are the common patterns of code-mixing among Nigerian youth online?
What socio-cultural factors drive code-mixing in digital communication?
How does code-mixing impact language standardization and identity?
Significance of the Study
This study enhances our understanding of hybrid language practices by examining code-mixing in Nigerian youth communication. It provides valuable insights for educators, linguists, and policymakers regarding language evolution and identity formation in digital contexts (Uzo, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of Terms:
Code-Mixing: The blending of elements from two or more languages.
