Background of the Study
Social media memes have emerged as a cultural phenomenon, significantly influencing language use and structure. In Nigeria, memes circulating on Instagram and TikTok have become vehicles for morphological innovation, blending humor, cultural references, and linguistic creativity. This study examines how these digital artifacts contribute to morphological changes, such as the creation of neologisms, word blending, and innovative affixation processes. Memes encapsulate complex cultural ideas in concise, playful forms, prompting users to adopt and adapt language in novel ways (Afolabi, 2023). The comparative analysis between Instagram and TikTok highlights how platform-specific features—such as visual style, video length, and user demographics—influence morphological practices. As these memes gain traction, they serve as both reflections and catalysts of broader language evolution. By investigating these processes, the study contributes to our understanding of how digital media facilitates linguistic creativity and adaptation, providing a theoretical framework for the integration of digital morphology into traditional linguistic models (Okoro, 2024). The research draws on digital semiotics and sociolinguistic theory to explore the dynamic relationship between meme culture and morphological innovation (Nwankwo, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
Although social media memes are widely recognized for their cultural impact, there is limited research on their role in driving morphological change in Nigerian language. Current studies focus primarily on the humorous and visual aspects of memes, neglecting their linguistic consequences. The mechanisms through which memes influence morphological structures—such as the formation of new words or the alteration of existing ones—are not well understood. This study aims to fill this gap by providing a comparative analysis of meme usage on Instagram and TikTok, thereby elucidating the relationship between digital humor and morphological innovation. Addressing this issue is essential for developing comprehensive models of language change in digital contexts (Chinwe, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To examine morphological innovations induced by memes on Instagram and TikTok.

  2. To compare the morphological effects across these two platforms.

  3. To develop a framework for understanding digital morphology in meme culture.

Research Questions:

  1. What morphological changes are associated with meme usage on Instagram and TikTok?

  2. How do platform-specific features influence these changes?

  3. What theoretical model best explains the impact of memes on language morphology?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the intersection of digital culture and linguistic morphology, providing insights into how social media memes shape language evolution in Nigeria. Its comparative approach offers valuable perspectives for linguists, educators, and digital media analysts. The findings contribute to the broader understanding of digital communication and language innovation (Afolabi, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Meme: A cultural element or idea that spreads rapidly online.

  2. Morphology: The study of word formation and structure.

  3. Digital Semiotics: The study of sign processes in digital media.
