Background of the Study
Digital influencers have emerged as pivotal figures in shaping contemporary language practices, with TikTok serving as a prominent platform for such influence. In Nigeria, TikTok content created by digital influencers is increasingly recognized for its impact on phonetic trends. Influencers often employ distinctive pronunciations, intonations, and speech patterns that resonate with younger audiences, thereby setting new standards in phonetic expression (Okoro, 2023). Their creative use of language not only mirrors but also actively molds public speech norms. The study of these phenomena reveals a complex interplay between digital persona and linguistic innovation, where the hyper-visual and auditory nature of TikTok encourages phonetic experimentation and adaptation. This process is intertwined with issues of identity, social status, and cultural expression as influencers become role models for millions (Adenuga, 2024). The digital medium’s immediacy further accelerates the diffusion of these phonetic trends across diverse demographic groups. By examining TikTok content, this study explores how digital influencers contribute to phonetic shifts, offering insights into the mechanisms by which online media shape spoken language (Nwosu, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Despite growing interest in digital influencer culture, there is limited research on the specific impact of TikTok influencers on Nigerian phonetics. Early observations indicate that influencers’ distinct speech patterns are rapidly adopted by their audiences, yet the underlying mechanisms of this influence remain underexplored. The gap in current research limits our understanding of how media-driven phonetic trends affect everyday speech practices and broader language evolution. This study addresses this deficiency by focusing on TikTok content, examining how digital influencers shape and disseminate phonetic innovations. Understanding these dynamics is essential for capturing the full scope of digital media’s role in modern linguistic change (Akinola, 2023). Without such investigation, the influence of digital media on phonetic evolution remains inadequately documented (Eze, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To examine the phonetic characteristics promoted by Nigerian TikTok influencers.
To analyze the audience’s adoption of these phonetic trends.
To assess the overall impact of digital influencer culture on Nigerian phonetics.
Research Questions:
What phonetic features are most prominent in TikTok influencer content?
How do followers adopt and adapt these phonetic features?
What is the broader impact of digital influencer culture on Nigerian phonetic practices?
Significance of the Study
This study is significant because it investigates the intersection of digital media influence and phonetic evolution in Nigeria. The findings will provide valuable insights for linguists and communication experts by elucidating the role of digital influencers in shaping modern phonetic practices. The research contributes to a deeper understanding of media-driven language change, offering implications for language teaching and media literacy programs (Obi, 2024).

Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of Terms:
Digital Influencer: An individual with significant online presence and impact on followers’ behaviors.
