Background of the Study
Facebook groups have evolved into significant online communities that reflect diverse linguistic practices, particularly regarding syntax in Nigerian English. These groups provide a dynamic forum where formal and informal registers converge, leading to syntactic innovations that diverge from standard grammatical conventions. Nigerian Facebook groups are characterized by their vibrant discourse, where members frequently engage in code-switching, non-standard syntactic structures, and creative sentence constructions (Adewale, 2023). This online communication environment has transformed the traditional boundaries of language use. Comparative analyses reveal that such syntactic variations not only reflect social identities and group affiliations but also serve as adaptive responses to the rapid pace of digital interactions (Ibrahim, 2024). The interplay between indigenous linguistic structures and digital discourse underscores the complex nature of online language evolution. Furthermore, the comparative approach in this study aims to differentiate the syntactic features across various Facebook groups, providing insights into the broader implications for language standardization and educational practices. By situating online discourse within the wider context of Nigerian sociolinguistics, this research elucidates the transformative power of digital media on language use and syntactic norms (Ola, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
There is a notable lack of comprehensive research on how Facebook group discourse influences syntactic structures in Nigerian English. Although preliminary observations indicate significant syntactic deviations from traditional grammar, the mechanisms and socio-cultural implications behind these variations remain under-investigated. Existing literature tends to focus on individual language components, such as vocabulary and phonology, while the syntactic dimension is often overlooked. This gap in research is problematic, as understanding syntactic changes is critical to comprehending overall language evolution in digital communication contexts. The study seeks to address these shortcomings by evaluating and comparing syntactic patterns across different Facebook groups, thereby offering a nuanced understanding of the digital transformation of language (Chukwu, 2023). This will ultimately contribute to more informed discussions on language policy and educational practices in Nigeria (Ndukwe, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate syntactic variations in Nigerian Facebook group discourse.

  2. To compare syntactic structures across different online communities.

  3. To assess the impact of digital communication on conventional syntactic norms.

Research Questions:

  1. What syntactic variations can be identified in Nigerian Facebook group discourse?

  2. How do these variations differ among distinct Facebook communities?

  3. What factors contribute to the emergence of non-standard syntactic patterns online?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides an in-depth analysis of syntactic evolution in Nigerian digital communities. Its comparative framework highlights the influence of online interactions on traditional grammar, offering valuable insights for educators, linguists, and policy makers. The research enriches the discourse on digital language change, emphasizing the need to re-examine standard linguistic models in light of emerging digital communication practices. These findings contribute to broader debates on language standardization and the educational implications of digital literacy (Eke, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Facebook Group Discourse: The collective language use and interaction within Facebook communities.

  2. Syntax: The arrangement of words and phrases to create well-formed sentences in a language.

  3. Comparative Analysis: A methodological approach that compares different entities to identify similarities and differences.
