ABSTRACT

This study was carried out on improving technologies for inland aquaculture in Nigeria. To achieve this, three significant research objectives were formulated. The survey design was adopted and the simple random sampling techniques were employed in this study. The population size comprise of civil servants in the ministry of agriculture and rural development in Abuja, Nigeria. In determining the sample size, the researcher conveniently selected 39 respondents while 38 were received and 35 were validated. Self-constructed and validated questionnaire was used for data collection. The collected and validated questionnaires were analyzed using frequency tables and percentage. The result of the findings reveals that the technologies been used for inland aquaculture in Nigeria include; recirculating aquaculture systems, automatic fish farm minecraft, fish sorting machine, solar aerator for fish farming, and fish pumps & fish elevators. The findings also revealed that factors which hinders the improvement in technologies for inland aquaculture in Nigeria include; source of information, complexity of technology, accessibility of technology, affordability of the technology and lack of technical know how. In regard to the findings, the study recommends that the Nigeria mariculture industry can be developed through innovative technology transfer between the aquaculture industries and research institutes/higher institution. This should reflect growth in terms of facilities, utilities and equipment that enable commercial production of aquatic organisms, throughout their life cycles and in captivity. This increased production may be feasible from scientific and technology advancement through a sustainable aquaculture system.
