CROSS VENTILATION IN PUBLIC BUILDING IN JOS METROPOLIS (ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES)

Abstract

This study was carried out on cross ventilation in public building in Jos metropolis. It was the aim of the study to analyze the level of performance of natural air Ventilation with a case study of some Churches, Schools and Hospitals in Jos North Area of Plateau State. The study adopted a survey method in form of questionnaires because it gave the opportunity to make inferences about the characteristics of a population which is the purpose of the study. Purposive sampling was used in the selection of 130 subjects with possibilities of attrition considered before drawing the population sample of public building users as when there is no sample frame, a small or medium sample size (5%-10%) of the population size is said to be adequate.

The study employed both primary and secondary sources of data. The data and variables obtained from the research work of the sampled population were subjected to the use of statistical tools and statistical analysis. 130 copies of questionnaire were administered, dully considering attrition; only 109 were returned by the respondents and collected by the researcher. The study concluded that proper ventilation is required when raising any public building in order to provide ventilation for people that are using it. The study finally recommended that the government should set-up strict laws guiding the construction of public building in order to provide adequate cross ventilation, defaulters should be punished.
