CONDITIONS OF SERVICE AND TEACHER’S JOB SATISFACTION IN SECONDARY SCHOOL IN LOCAL EDUCATION COMMITTEE, UYO AKWA IBOM STATE

ABSTRACT

 

This study investigated the “Conditions Of Service And Teacher’s Job Satisfaction In Secondary School In Local Education Committee, Uyo Akwa Ibom State”. The research aimed at establishing whether the relationship between conditions of service and teachers’ job satisfaction could have any significant influence on teachers’ productivity in secondary schools in Uyo. To achieve the objectives of the study. Such as to find out whether there is relationship between prompt payment of teachers salary, teachers’ regular promotion and job satisfaction; to find out the influence of teachers promotion. The hypothesis of the study is that there is no significant relationship between teachers job satisfaction, salary, promotion etc. the researcher randomly selected a sample of 81 principals, 215 teachers and 86 supervisors from the target population of this study. The selection of the schools was carried out through simple random sampling technique while respondents for the study were selected on purposive sampling techniques. Data was obtained through the use of research questionnaire developed by the researcher for the study which was validated by experts in educational administration and planning of the University. The questionnaire was subjected to a pilot study conducted in 6 secondary schools, in Uyo and reliability coefficient was 0.85. five research questions were answered while five null hypothesis were tested using Pearson Product Moment correlation (PPMC) Multiple comparison test was also employed in verifying the  result of hypothesis. Descriptive survey method was adopted for this research work. The 3 educational zones of the state were used for the study. Data collected was obtained and analysed. Findings indicated that 4 of the hypotheses showed that there was significant relationships between prompt payment of salary, promotion, fringe benefits, staff development and staff job satisfaction. But there was no significant relationship between staff retirement benefits and job satisfaction. Conclusions were made, and recommendations were proffered such as paying teachers’ salaries promptly, promoting them regularly, giving them surprise packages, sending them on training programmes and ensuring their retirement benefits. Finally, suggestions were proffered for further studies. Such as similar studies to be carried out in other states of the country so that ideas can be compared, wholistic actions should be taken by government in order to realise proper satisfaction of staff.
