Background of the study:

Fuelwood consumption in Obubra Local Government Area is a major driver of forest depletion. With increasing population pressures and limited access to alternative energy sources, local communities heavily rely on fuelwood for cooking and heating (Nnamdi, 2023). The unsustainable harvesting of fuelwood has accelerated deforestation, leading to habitat loss, biodiversity decline, and a reduction in the natural carbon sink capacity of forests (Chukwuemeka, 2024). Research shows that continuous exploitation of forest resources not only disrupts local ecosystems but also impacts climate regulation and soil conservation. The study examines the socio-economic factors that contribute to high fuelwood consumption and evaluates the consequent environmental degradation. By exploring alternative energy sources and sustainable harvesting methods, this research aims to propose strategies that can alleviate the pressure on forest resources while meeting local energy needs (Nnamdi, 2023).

Statement of the problem:

Fuelwood consumption in Obubra is contributing significantly to forest depletion, adversely affecting biodiversity and ecosystem services. The lack of sustainable energy alternatives exacerbates the problem, leading to ongoing environmental degradation. This study aims to identify the causes and suggest sustainable alternatives to reduce fuelwood dependence (Chukwuemeka, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

To evaluate the impact of fuelwood consumption on forest resources.

To identify socio-economic factors influencing fuelwood dependence.

To propose sustainable energy alternatives to reduce forest depletion.

Research questions:

What is the relationship between fuelwood consumption and forest depletion in Obubra?

Which socio-economic factors contribute to high fuelwood dependence?

How can sustainable energy alternatives be promoted to reduce reliance on fuelwood?

Research Hypotheses:

H₀: Fuelwood consumption does not significantly contribute to forest depletion.

H₀: Socio-economic factors do not significantly influence fuelwood dependence.

H₀: Sustainable energy alternatives will not significantly reduce forest depletion.

Significance of the study:

This study is significant as it addresses the environmental impact of fuelwood consumption on forest resources. Its findings will inform energy policy and promote sustainable practices to protect forest ecosystems in Obubra (Nnamdi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:

The research is limited to the effect of fuelwood consumption on forest depletion in Obubra Local Government Area and does not extend to other forms of energy consumption or geographical regions.

Definitions of terms:

Fuelwood Consumption: The use of wood as a primary source of energy for cooking and heating.

Forest Depletion: The reduction of forest cover due to deforestation and unsustainable use.

Sustainable Energy Alternatives: Renewable energy sources that reduce dependence on non-renewable resources.
