Background of the study:

Urban expansion in Osogbo Local Government Area has brought about significant changes in land use, often at the expense of traditional farming practices. As urban areas expand, valuable agricultural lands are converted into residential and commercial zones, leading to the displacement of farming communities (Adebanjo, 2023). Traditional farming, which relies on indigenous knowledge and sustainable practices, is increasingly marginalized by urban development. This transformation not only threatens food security but also erodes cultural heritage associated with traditional agriculture (Olusegun, 2024). Research indicates that the loss of agricultural lands has resulted in reduced local food production, economic instability among rural communities, and increased dependency on urban food supply chains. Additionally, rapid urbanization without proper planning exacerbates conflicts between urban and rural land uses. The study aims to examine these impacts and explore ways to integrate urban planning with the preservation of traditional farming systems (Adebanjo, 2023).

Statement of the problem:

The rapid urban expansion in Osogbo is undermining traditional farming practices, leading to loss of agricultural land, cultural erosion, and economic challenges for rural communities. The problem is exacerbated by inadequate urban planning that fails to accommodate sustainable agriculture, thus threatening food security and cultural heritage (Olusegun, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

To evaluate the impact of urban expansion on traditional farming practices.

To assess the socio-economic consequences for displaced farming communities.

To propose integrative urban planning strategies that preserve agricultural lands.

Research questions:

How has urban expansion affected traditional farming practices in Osogbo?

What are the socio-economic impacts on farming communities?

How can urban planning be modified to support traditional agriculture?

Research Hypotheses:

H₀: Urban expansion has no significant impact on traditional farming practices.

H₀: There is no significant relationship between urban development and the socio-economic status of farming communities.

H₀: Integrative urban planning strategies will not significantly preserve traditional farming practices.

Significance of the study:

This study is significant in bridging urban development and agricultural sustainability. Its findings will provide insights for policymakers to balance urban expansion with the preservation of traditional farming, thus safeguarding cultural heritage and food security (Adebanjo, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:

This study focuses on the impact of urban expansion on traditional farming practices within Osogbo Local Government Area only, excluding other urban areas or agricultural practices.

Definitions of terms:

Urban Expansion: The growth of urban areas into previously rural regions.

Traditional Farming: Farming practices based on indigenous methods and cultural heritage.

Urban Planning: The process of designing and regulating land use in urban environments.
