Background of the study:
Sustainable fishing practices are vital for preserving aquatic ecosystems and supporting the livelihoods of communities in Brass Local Government Area. Overfishing, illegal fishing techniques, and environmental degradation have threatened fish stocks and biodiversity (Ike, 2023). In response, local stakeholders have adopted sustainable practices, including regulated fishing seasons, gear restrictions, and community-based management strategies (Abiola, 2024). These practices are grounded in both traditional knowledge and modern conservation principles. The sustainability of fishing activities ensures long-term economic benefits while preserving marine ecosystems for future generations (Ekanem, 2023). However, challenges such as inadequate enforcement of regulations, lack of funding, and limited technological support remain prevalent. This study aims to appraise the effectiveness of sustainable fishing practices and their role in promoting ecological balance and socio-economic stability in the region (Ike, 2023).
Statement of the problem:
Despite efforts to promote sustainable fishing practices in Brass, overexploitation of fish resources continues due to regulatory challenges and non-compliance by some stakeholders. The sustainability measures are inconsistently applied, jeopardizing both marine biodiversity and the livelihoods of local fishermen. This study seeks to identify gaps and evaluate sustainable practices for long-term ecological and economic stability (Abiola, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
To evaluate current sustainable fishing practices in Brass.
To identify challenges in enforcing sustainable practices.
To recommend strategies to enhance compliance and sustainability in fishing.
Research questions:
What sustainable fishing practices are currently implemented in Brass?
What are the primary challenges in enforcing these practices?
How can sustainable fishing be improved to ensure long-term resource conservation?
Research Hypotheses:
H₀: Sustainable fishing practices do not significantly contribute to fish stock preservation.
H₀: There is no significant relationship between regulatory enforcement and sustainable fishing outcomes.
H₀: Improved sustainable practices will not significantly enhance ecological and economic stability.
Significance of the study:
This study provides valuable insights into sustainable fishing practices and their environmental and socio-economic impacts. Its findings will inform policy decisions and support the development of strategies that enhance fish stock sustainability in Brass (Ekanem, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
The study focuses exclusively on sustainable fishing practices in Brass Local Government Area, examining regulatory, environmental, and socio-economic factors without extending beyond the area.
Definitions of terms:
Sustainable Fishing: Fishing practices that maintain fish populations and environmental balance.
Biodiversity: The variety of life in a particular habitat or ecosystem.
Compliance: Adherence to established rules and regulations.
