Background of the study:

Sea-level rise, driven by climate change, poses significant challenges for coastal agriculture in Nembe Local Government Area. Increased saltwater intrusion and flooding compromise soil fertility, reduce crop yields, and alter the traditional agricultural landscape (Obi, 2023). Coastal farmers are increasingly witnessing the encroachment of saline water into arable lands, which affects the growth of staple crops and threatens local food security. This phenomenon necessitates urgent adaptation measures to protect agricultural productivity and the livelihoods of coastal communities (Egharevba, 2024). The study aims to evaluate the extent of these impacts and explore adaptive strategies that can mitigate the adverse effects of sea-level rise on coastal agriculture (Obi, 2023).

Statement of the problem:

Sea-level rise in Nembe is leading to increased saltwater intrusion and flooding, which significantly impact coastal agriculture. The degradation of arable land and declining crop yields pose serious risks to food security and local livelihoods. This study seeks to identify these impacts and propose adaptive measures (Egharevba, 2024).

Objectives of the study:

To assess the impact of sea-level rise on coastal agriculture.

To identify the challenges faced by coastal farmers due to saltwater intrusion.

To recommend adaptive strategies to sustain agricultural productivity.

Research questions:

How does sea-level rise affect agricultural productivity in Nembe?

What are the main challenges faced by coastal farmers?

Which adaptation measures can mitigate the adverse impacts of sea-level rise?

Research Hypotheses:

H₀: Sea-level rise does not significantly impact coastal agriculture in Nembe.

H₀: There is no significant relationship between saltwater intrusion and reduced crop yields.

H₀: Adaptation measures will not significantly improve agricultural productivity under sea-level rise conditions.

Significance of the study:

This study is significant as it addresses the critical issue of sea-level rise and its impact on coastal agriculture. The findings will inform adaptive strategies that protect farmers' livelihoods and enhance food security in Nembe (Obi, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:

The study is limited to examining the impact of sea-level rise on coastal agriculture in Nembe Local Government Area, excluding other coastal issues or regions.

Definitions of terms:

Sea-Level Rise: An increase in the global average level of the ocean due to climate change.

Saltwater Intrusion: The movement of saline water into freshwater resources, affecting soil and water quality.

Coastal Agriculture: Farming practices conducted in coastal regions, often vulnerable to sea-level changes.
