Background of the Study

Animal husbandry has long been an essential economic activity in Ogbomoso North, providing both nutritional and financial benefits to rural communities. Livestock rearing, including cattle, goats, and poultry, supports household incomes and contributes to food security (Adebayo, 2023). In recent years, efforts to modernize animal husbandry practices have increased productivity and improved market access, thus reinforcing its role as a pillar of economic sustenance (Kolawole, 2024). However, challenges such as disease outbreaks, inadequate veterinary services, and fluctuating market prices continue to affect the profitability and sustainability of animal husbandry (Opeyemi, 2025). This study assesses the contribution of animal husbandry to the local economy by examining production systems, market dynamics, and the socio-economic factors that influence livestock rearing practices. It also investigates potential strategies to enhance animal health, productivity, and market integration to ensure long-term economic viability.

Statement of the Problem

Animal husbandry in Ogbomoso North faces significant challenges that limit its economic potential. Issues such as disease outbreaks, insufficient veterinary care, and unstable market prices undermine the sustainability of livestock production (Adebayo, 2023). These challenges adversely affect household incomes and food security in the region (Kolawole, 2024). The lack of modern management practices and inadequate policy support further compound these problems. This study aims to examine these challenges and propose strategies that will improve the overall contribution of animal husbandry to economic sustenance in Ogbomoso North (Opeyemi, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

To assess the economic contribution of animal husbandry in Ogbomoso North.

To identify challenges affecting livestock production.

To recommend strategies for enhancing the sustainability of animal husbandry.

Research Questions:

How does animal husbandry contribute to local economic sustenance?

What challenges hinder effective livestock production?

What measures can improve animal husbandry practices and market access?

Research Hypotheses:

H₁: Animal husbandry significantly contributes to household incomes in Ogbomoso North.

H₂: Veterinary and management challenges negatively impact livestock productivity.

H₃: Strategic interventions can enhance the sustainability of animal husbandry.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive analysis of animal husbandry’s role in economic sustenance in Ogbomoso North. The findings will help inform local policymakers, farmers, and development agencies on measures to enhance productivity and market integration, thereby boosting rural economies and ensuring food security (Adebayo, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to the role of animal husbandry in Ogbomoso North Local Government Area, focusing on local livestock production and market challenges without extending to other agricultural activities.

Definitions of Terms:

Animal Husbandry: The practice of breeding and raising livestock for economic purposes.

Economic Sustenance: The means by which households maintain their financial stability.

Productivity: The efficiency and output of livestock rearing practices.
