Background of the Study
Polygamous family structures, though culturally accepted in some communities, present unique challenges for children’s psychological development, particularly regarding self-esteem. In Oron, where polygamy is relatively common, children navigate complex family dynamics that can influence their sense of identity and self-worth (Udo, 2023). Research indicates that the presence of multiple parental figures, coupled with potential resource dilution and sibling rivalry, may lead to issues such as lower self-esteem and feelings of neglect (Okon, 2024). However, supportive family bonds and effective parental communication can mitigate these negative effects, fostering resilience and positive self-perception (Ekong, 2025). This study critically examines how polygamous family structures affect children’s self-esteem, exploring the interplay of family dynamics, parental involvement, and societal expectations. The findings are expected to provide insights into both the adverse and beneficial aspects of such family arrangements on children’s psychological well-being.
Statement of the Problem
In Oron, children in polygamous families may experience diminished self-esteem due to complex family dynamics and resource distribution challenges. The emotional neglect, competition among siblings, and potential favoritism can adversely affect their self-worth. Despite cultural acceptance of polygamy, the psychological impacts on children have not been adequately addressed. This study aims to investigate how polygamous family structures influence children’s self-esteem and to identify factors that either exacerbate or alleviate these issues (Udo, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the impact of polygamous family structures on children’s self-esteem.
To identify key familial factors affecting self-worth in polygamous settings.
To propose strategies for enhancing psychological support for affected children.
Research Questions:
How does a polygamous family structure affect children’s self-esteem?
What familial factors contribute to self-esteem issues in these families?
What interventions can improve self-esteem among children in polygamous households?
Research Hypotheses:
Polygamous family structures negatively impact children’s self-esteem.
Unequal resource distribution is associated with lower self-worth.
Enhanced parental communication can improve children’s self-esteem.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the effects of polygamous family structures on children’s self-esteem, offering insights for educational and psychological interventions. The research will inform policymakers and community leaders on strategies to support affected children and improve their long-term well-being (Okon, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to exploring the impact of polygamous family structures on children’s self-esteem in Oron Local Government Area, focusing solely on familial and psychological dimensions.
Definitions of Terms:
Polygamous Family Structures: Family systems where a parent has multiple spouses simultaneously.
