Background of the Study
Folklore and storytelling have been central to cultural transmission in Ilesa East, playing a vital role in shaping children’s cognitive and emotional development. Traditional narratives not only entertain but also convey moral values, cultural norms, and life lessons (Adewale, 2023). Through engaging stories, children learn problem-solving skills, empathy, and social norms, which are crucial for emotional regulation and cognitive growth (Oluwaseun, 2024). The rich oral traditions in Ilesa East serve as an educational medium that enhances imagination, language skills, and cultural identity. However, the rapid modernization and introduction of digital media have challenged the continuity of these practices (Funmi, 2025). This study critically examines the influence of folklore and storytelling on the developmental trajectories of children, exploring how these traditional practices contribute to both cognitive abilities and emotional resilience. It also assesses potential conflicts between traditional narratives and modern educational practices.
Statement of the Problem
In Ilesa East, the decline in traditional storytelling due to modernization is raising concerns about its impact on children’s cognitive and emotional development. The reduced exposure to indigenous narratives may lead to diminished moral reasoning, cultural identity, and emotional regulation skills. This gap calls for an investigation into how folklore and storytelling influence developmental outcomes. Addressing this issue is essential for preserving cultural heritage and enhancing educational practices, ensuring that children benefit from the cognitive and emotional advantages of traditional narratives (Adewale, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the role of folklore in cognitive development among children.
To assess the emotional impact of traditional storytelling.
To recommend measures to integrate traditional narratives into modern education.
Research Questions:
How does folklore influence cognitive development in children?
What is the effect of storytelling on children’s emotional well-being?
How can traditional narratives be effectively integrated into educational curricula?
Research Hypotheses:
Exposure to folklore significantly enhances children’s cognitive skills.
Traditional storytelling positively influences emotional development.
Integrating folklore into education improves overall developmental outcomes.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the critical role of folklore and storytelling in shaping children’s cognitive and emotional development. The insights gained will inform educational strategies and cultural preservation efforts, ultimately benefiting community development in Ilesa East (Oluwaseun, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to assessing the impact of folklore and storytelling on children’s cognitive and emotional development in Ilesa East Local Government Area, focusing solely on traditional narrative practices.
Definitions of Terms:
Folklore: Traditional beliefs, myths, and stories passed down through generations.
Storytelling: The act of narrating stories to convey cultural and moral values.
