Background of the Study
Religious beliefs are deeply embedded in the cultural fabric of Abakaliki, profoundly influencing personal and communal approaches to health. In the realm of mental health, these beliefs often determine treatment choices and the acceptance of various therapeutic modalities (Eke, 2023). Many residents of Abakaliki turn to faith-based healing practices, prayer, and spiritual counseling as primary interventions for mental health issues, sometimes in preference to conventional psychiatric treatments (Ibekwe, 2024). This interplay between religion and health has both positive and negative ramifications. On one hand, strong religious faith can provide emotional support, resilience, and a sense of purpose. On the other hand, reliance on religious explanations for mental illness may delay or deter individuals from seeking evidence-based treatment (Okafor, 2025). This study examines the influence of religious beliefs on mental health treatment choices, exploring how faith-based interventions are integrated with or substituted for conventional care. It aims to provide insights that could lead to more holistic treatment approaches that respect religious values while ensuring effective mental health care.
Statement of the Problem
In Abakaliki, the predominance of religious beliefs significantly shapes mental health treatment choices, often resulting in a preference for faith-based healing over conventional medical interventions. This trend poses challenges for mental health practitioners who struggle to integrate evidence-based practices with deeply rooted spiritual approaches. The reluctance to engage with modern treatments can lead to delays in diagnosis and suboptimal care, exacerbating mental health issues. This study seeks to explore the underlying factors driving these treatment choices and to identify strategies that harmonize religious practices with effective mental health care (Eke, 2023).
