Background of the Study
Communal living arrangements have long been viewed as a source of emotional support, particularly for the elderly. In Afikpo North, many senior citizens reside in close-knit communities where shared experiences and intergenerational interactions are common (Ezenwa, 2023). Such settings can enhance emotional well-being by providing a sense of belonging, security, and mutual care. However, communal living also presents challenges, such as conflicts over resources, privacy concerns, and dependency issues (Iwu, 2024). Recent investigations reveal that while social integration in communal environments may improve emotional health, it can also lead to stress when individual needs are overlooked (Nnamdi, 2025). This study examines the dual impact of communal living on the emotional well-being of elderly residents. It critically analyzes both the benefits and drawbacks of shared living arrangements and how they shape seniors’ mental health outcomes in Afikpo North. The goal is to determine the conditions under which communal living fosters positive emotional well-being and to suggest improvements where necessary.
Statement of the Problem
Elderly residents in Afikpo North experience a complex interplay of benefits and challenges associated with communal living. Although communal environments can provide social support and enhance emotional well-being, issues such as resource conflicts and loss of privacy contribute to stress and emotional distress. The dual nature of communal living presents difficulties in maximizing its benefits while minimizing its adverse effects. Addressing these challenges is essential to improve the quality of life for the elderly. This study seeks to identify and analyze these dynamics in order to propose targeted interventions (Ezenwa, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the benefits of communal living on emotional well-being among the elderly.
To identify challenges associated with communal living that negatively affect emotional health.
To propose strategies for enhancing positive outcomes in communal settings.
Research Questions:
How does communal living affect the emotional well-being of the elderly?
What challenges arise from communal living arrangements?
What interventions can enhance emotional support in communal settings?
Research Hypotheses:
Communal living improves emotional well-being when adequate social support is provided.
Resource conflicts negatively impact the emotional health of elderly residents.
Targeted interventions can optimize the benefits of communal living.
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the multifaceted impact of communal living on the emotional well-being of the elderly. Its findings will assist policymakers and community organizers in developing targeted interventions to improve the quality of life for elderly residents in Afikpo North (Iwu, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining communal living and its impact on emotional well-being among elderly residents in Afikpo North Local Government Area, focusing solely on communal dynamics.
