Background of the Study
Market women in Onitsha South face multifaceted stressors ranging from economic instability to societal pressures, making their coping mechanisms a critical area of study. The daily challenges of fluctuating market demands, long working hours, and financial uncertainties create an environment rife with psychological stress (Nwankwo, 2023). Researchers have observed that coping strategies vary significantly across cultural and socioeconomic groups, with market women often relying on both traditional and adaptive mechanisms to manage stress (Okeke, 2024). In this context, social support networks, religious beliefs, and personal resilience play a pivotal role in alleviating stress and fostering mental well-being (Ibe, 2025). The interplay between individual psychological resources and external socio-economic factors determines the overall mental health outcomes of these women. This study critically examines the stressors faced by market women and evaluates the efficacy of various coping strategies, aiming to identify best practices that can inform targeted interventions and policy recommendations.
Statement of the Problem
Market women in Onitsha South face persistent stress due to economic volatility, high workloads, and limited access to mental health resources. These challenges have led to significant psychological strain, adversely affecting their productivity and overall quality of life. The inadequacy of formal support systems exacerbates the situation, necessitating an in-depth analysis of the coping mechanisms employed by these women. There is a critical need to understand how stressors are managed and to develop strategies that can effectively alleviate mental health burdens in this vulnerable population (Nwankwo, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the sources of stress among market women.
  2. To identify and analyze the coping mechanisms employed.
  3. To recommend interventions for improved mental health support.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the main sources of stress among market women in Onitsha South?
  2. Which coping mechanisms are most commonly used?
  3. How can these strategies be enhanced to improve mental health outcomes?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Economic challenges significantly contribute to stress levels among market women.
  2. Social support networks improve the effectiveness of coping mechanisms.
  3. Targeted interventions can reduce stress and enhance well-being.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it offers a comprehensive evaluation of stress and coping mechanisms among market women, providing insights for stakeholders to develop supportive interventions. The research informs policymakers and mental health practitioners on tailored strategies to mitigate stress, improve quality of life, and empower women economically (Okeke, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to analyzing stress factors and coping mechanisms among market women in Onitsha South Local Government Area. It does not extend to other occupational groups or regions.
Definitions of Terms:

  • Stress: A psychological response to external pressures that overwhelm an individual’s coping abilities.
  • Coping Mechanisms: Behavioral and cognitive strategies used to manage stress.
  • Social Support Networks: Systems of assistance provided by family, friends, and community members.
