Background of the Study
Fire outbreaks in urban markets in Aba South have increasingly disrupted economic activities and threatened the livelihoods of traders (Mensah, 2023). These incidents often result from overcrowding, inadequate fire safety measures, and outdated infrastructure, leading to substantial financial losses and social disruption (Okoye, 2024). The vulnerability of urban markets to fire incidents raises critical concerns about the sustainability of these economic hubs. In addition to direct property damage, fire outbreaks disrupt supply chains, reduce consumer confidence, and cause long-term economic setbacks for affected communities (Ibrahim, 2025). This study investigates the causes and consequences of fire outbreaks in Aba South markets, examining both immediate and ripple economic effects. By evaluating the preparedness of market infrastructures and the efficacy of emergency response strategies, the research aims to propose interventions that could mitigate future risks and promote resilient urban economic practices (Mensah, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
Fire outbreaks in Aba South urban markets have become a recurrent issue, causing significant economic losses and disrupting the livelihoods of traders (Mensah, 2023). Inadequate safety measures, overcrowding, and poor infrastructural maintenance contribute to these destructive incidents (Okoye, 2024). The resulting economic impact, including business interruptions and loss of assets, undermines the stability of the local market economy (Ibrahim, 2025). This study seeks to critically assess the factors contributing to fire outbreaks and to evaluate their economic consequences to inform more robust fire prevention and emergency management strategies.
