Background of the Study
Urbanization in Ijebu-Ode has significantly altered traditional family structures, leading to evolving social norms and lifestyle changes (Roberts, 2023). The rapid expansion of urban areas, driven by industrialization and economic growth, has shifted population dynamics and redefined intergenerational relationships. Traditional extended family systems, which once provided robust social support, are increasingly giving way to nuclear family arrangements and fragmented community networks (Harrison, 2024). This transformation impacts not only familial relationships but also the provision of care for the elderly and socialization of the youth. As urban lifestyles become more fast-paced and individualistic, traditional practices and values are being challenged, necessitating a deeper understanding of these social changes (Morrison, 2025). The study explores the consequences of urbanization on family structures, examining the factors that drive these changes and their broader social implications (Roberts, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
The rapid urbanization in Ijebu-Ode has led to significant changes in traditional family structures, weakening long-established support networks (Roberts, 2023). The shift towards nuclear families and increased individualism have created challenges in caregiving, social support, and community cohesion (Harrison, 2024). These changes have resulted in social isolation for certain demographics, particularly the elderly, and have contributed to the erosion of cultural values and traditions (Morrison, 2025). This study aims to critically examine these impacts to propose ways to preserve beneficial traditional practices amidst urban growth.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To examine the effects of urbanization on traditional family structures.
  2. To assess the social implications of shifting family dynamics.
  3. To recommend strategies for preserving positive traditional practices in urban settings.

Research Questions:

  1. How has urbanization affected traditional family structures in Ijebu-Ode?
  2. What social challenges have emerged due to changing family dynamics?
  3. How can traditional values be integrated into modern urban life?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Urbanization significantly alters traditional family structures.
  2. Shifts in family dynamics negatively impact social support systems.
  3. Integrative policies can help preserve beneficial traditional practices.

Significance of the Study
This study provides important insights into how urbanization reshapes family structures and social networks. Its findings will help policymakers and community leaders develop initiatives that balance modern urban development with the preservation of valuable cultural traditions and social support systems (Roberts, 2023; Harrison, 2024; Morrison, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to investigating the impact of urbanization on traditional family structures in Ijebu-Ode.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Urbanization: The process of population concentration in urban areas.
  • Traditional Family Structures: Long-established patterns of familial organization and support.
  • Nuclear Family: A family unit consisting of parents and their children.
