Background of the Study
Urbanization in Ijebu-Ode has significantly altered traditional family structures, leading to evolving social norms and lifestyle changes (Roberts, 2023). The rapid expansion of urban areas, driven by industrialization and economic growth, has shifted population dynamics and redefined intergenerational relationships. Traditional extended family systems, which once provided robust social support, are increasingly giving way to nuclear family arrangements and fragmented community networks (Harrison, 2024). This transformation impacts not only familial relationships but also the provision of care for the elderly and socialization of the youth. As urban lifestyles become more fast-paced and individualistic, traditional practices and values are being challenged, necessitating a deeper understanding of these social changes (Morrison, 2025). The study explores the consequences of urbanization on family structures, examining the factors that drive these changes and their broader social implications (Roberts, 2023).
Statement of the Problem
The rapid urbanization in Ijebu-Ode has led to significant changes in traditional family structures, weakening long-established support networks (Roberts, 2023). The shift towards nuclear families and increased individualism have created challenges in caregiving, social support, and community cohesion (Harrison, 2024). These changes have resulted in social isolation for certain demographics, particularly the elderly, and have contributed to the erosion of cultural values and traditions (Morrison, 2025). This study aims to critically examine these impacts to propose ways to preserve beneficial traditional practices amidst urban growth.
