Background of the Study
Rural-urban migration in Abakaliki has been accelerating, driven by the search for better economic opportunities and improved living conditions (Edwards, 2023). This demographic shift has profound implications for social services such as education, healthcare, and housing in urban centers. The influx of migrants places pressure on existing public services, often leading to overcrowded facilities and strained resources (Nguyen, 2024). Social services, designed to cater to a smaller, more stable population, struggle to adapt rapidly to these changes. Moreover, the cultural integration of migrants into urban communities remains a significant challenge, influencing both service delivery and social cohesion (Foster, 2025). This study examines the socio-economic impacts of rural-urban migration, with a focus on the adequacy and responsiveness of social services in Abakaliki. By analyzing migration patterns and service utilization data, the research aims to provide policy recommendations for sustainable urban development and improved social service delivery (Edwards, 2023).

Statement of the Problem
The rapid influx of migrants into Abakaliki has overwhelmed local social services, resulting in inadequate access to quality education, healthcare, and housing (Edwards, 2023). The strain on resources has led to compromised service delivery and increased competition for limited facilities (Nguyen, 2024). Additionally, the socio-cultural integration of migrants poses further challenges, intensifying the pressure on urban infrastructure and community relations (Foster, 2025). This study seeks to understand and address the challenges arising from rural-urban migration to ensure effective social service provision.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To analyze the patterns and drivers of rural-urban migration in Abakaliki.
  2. To assess the impact of migration on social services delivery.
  3. To propose strategies for enhancing social service capacity and integration.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the primary drivers of rural-urban migration in Abakaliki?
  2. How does migration affect the quality and availability of social services?
  3. What policy measures can improve social service delivery amid rapid urbanization?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Rural-urban migration significantly strains social service infrastructures.
  2. The quality of social services declines with increased migration.
  3. Targeted policy interventions can alleviate the pressure on social services.

Significance of the Study
The study highlights the critical effects of rural-urban migration on social service delivery. Its findings will assist policymakers in developing strategies that enhance service capacity, promote integration, and foster sustainable urban development, ultimately improving quality of life for all residents (Edwards, 2023; Nguyen, 2024; Foster, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to assessing the effects of rural-urban migration on social services in Abakaliki.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Rural-Urban Migration: The movement of people from rural areas to urban centers.
  • Social Services: Public services provided to improve community welfare.
  • Integration: The process of incorporating migrants into the social fabric of a community.
