Background of the Study:
Urban crime has a profound effect on the daily lives and economic activities of women traders in Sapele. These women, who often operate in informal markets and public spaces, face heightened risks of theft, harassment, and violence (Amadi, 2023). Urban crime not only undermines their economic stability but also affects their social well-being and empowerment. This study critically examines the nexus between urban crime and its impact on women traders, focusing on the challenges they face in a volatile urban environment (Obi, 2024). The research delves into the socio-cultural and economic factors that increase vulnerability, including inadequate law enforcement and gender biases in security provision (Ifeoma, 2025). By combining quantitative crime statistics with qualitative narratives from affected traders, the study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of how urban crime impedes women’s economic participation and personal safety. The investigation further explores community-based initiatives and policy responses aimed at mitigating these adverse effects and promoting a safer business environment for women.

Statement of the Problem:
Women traders in Sapele are significantly affected by urban crime, facing daily challenges that jeopardize their economic activities and personal security. The prevalent criminal activities and lack of effective protective measures contribute to an unsafe trading environment, limiting women’s participation in the urban economy (Amadi, 2023). This study seeks to elucidate these issues and propose practical solutions (Obi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the impact of urban crime on the economic activities of women traders.
  • To identify the safety challenges faced by women in urban trading environments.
  • To recommend measures to enhance the security and empowerment of women traders.

Research Questions:

  • How does urban crime affect the business operations of women traders in Sapele?
  • What safety challenges do women traders encounter in urban markets?
  • What strategies can be implemented to improve security for women traders?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H₁: Urban crime significantly disrupts the economic activities of women traders.
  • H₂: Inadequate security measures contribute to increased vulnerability among women traders.
  • H₃: Community and policy interventions can effectively enhance safety for women traders.

Significance of the Study:
This study provides critical insights into the challenges faced by women traders due to urban crime, offering recommendations for improving their economic security and personal safety. Its findings will support policy reforms and community initiatives (Ifeoma, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to appraising the impact of urban crime on women traders in Sapele Local Government Area, Delta State, focusing solely on the economic and safety challenges within this urban context.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Urban Crime: Criminal activities occurring in urban settings that affect community safety.
  • Women Traders: Female entrepreneurs engaged in commercial activities, often in informal markets.
  • Empowerment: The process of increasing personal, economic, and political strength.
