Background of the Study:
social media has revolutionized political communication, particularly among urban youths in Benin City. With widespread internet access and mobile connectivity, young people increasingly use platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram to express political opinions, mobilize support, and engage in activism (Osagie, 2023). This digital revolution has reshaped traditional political structures and created new spaces for civic participation. However, the influence of social media is not without challenges; issues such as misinformation, online harassment, and digital divides may hinder meaningful political engagement (Ugbodaga, 2024). This study critically examines how social media influences political participation among urban youths in Egor, exploring its role in shaping political attitudes, mobilizing voter participation, and affecting policy discourse (Akinyi, 2025). By combining survey data with in-depth interviews, the research provides a nuanced understanding of the opportunities and challenges that digital platforms present for youth political activism. The study underscores the transformative potential of social media while calling for enhanced digital literacy and regulatory frameworks to mitigate associated risks.
Statement of the Problem:
Despite its potential to engage urban youths in political processes, social media in Benin City has also facilitated the spread of misinformation and polarization, undermining constructive political dialogue. This duality has led to concerns about the quality of youth political participation and the overall impact on democratic processes (Osagie, 2023). The study seeks to clarify these dynamics and identify remedial measures (Ugbodaga, 2024).
