Background of the Study:
Urban markets in Aba North are vibrant centers of commerce but also hotspots for potential fire hazards. Inadequate fire safety measures, combined with high population density and congested infrastructure, have raised concerns regarding the preparedness and resilience of these markets (Chukwu, 2023). Rapid urbanization and economic pressures have led to the expansion of market areas without corresponding improvements in safety protocols. This study critically evaluates fire safety preparedness in urban markets, examining the effectiveness of current fire prevention, emergency response, and public awareness programs (Eze, 2024). The research highlights the historical occurrence of fire outbreaks and the subsequent economic and human losses suffered by market communities. By incorporating qualitative interviews with market stakeholders and quantitative assessments of safety standards, the study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of fire risk management in Aba North. The investigation underscores the need for improved infrastructure, regular safety audits, and effective training programs to enhance market resilience against fire hazards (Okafor, 2025).
Statement of the Problem:
Fire outbreaks in urban markets in Aba North have caused significant economic losses and posed serious risks to public safety. The lack of adequate fire safety preparedness and emergency response mechanisms exacerbates these risks, leaving market vendors and patrons vulnerable (Chukwu, 2023). This study seeks to identify the deficiencies in current safety measures and propose improvements to reduce fire hazards (Eze, 2024).
