Background of the Study:
Efficient transportation systems are critical to urban development and economic growth. In Akure South, the condition of road infrastructure has a direct influence on transportation efficiency, affecting trade, mobility, and quality of life (Olayinka, 2023). Poor road maintenance, characterized by potholes, inadequate drainage, and irregular repairs, disrupts the smooth flow of traffic and increases vehicle operating costs. This study critically examines the relationship between road maintenance and transportation efficiency, emphasizing the broader implications for economic productivity and urban planning (Ajayi, 2024). Urban expansion in Akure South has intensified the demand for reliable transportation networks, yet maintenance practices have not kept pace with the rapid growth (Adekunle, 2025). The research investigates the institutional frameworks governing road upkeep and explores the impact of delayed maintenance on commuter safety and urban logistics. By integrating empirical data and policy analysis, the study aims to uncover the root causes of infrastructural decay and propose effective measures to enhance road conditions and overall transportation performance. In doing so, it contributes to a deeper understanding of the nexus between infrastructure maintenance and urban efficiency in rapidly developing areas.
Statement of the Problem:
Akure South experiences significant transportation inefficiencies due to deteriorating road conditions, which impede economic activity and compromise commuter safety. Inadequate maintenance practices and delayed repairs result in increased travel time, higher vehicle repair costs, and reduced overall urban mobility (Ajayi, 2024). These challenges underscore a critical need for systematic improvements in road maintenance policies (Olayinka, 2023).

Significance of the Study:
This study is important for urban planners and policymakers, as it provides evidence-based recommendations for enhancing road infrastructure and transportation efficiency. The findings will support strategies that improve commuter safety and economic productivity (Adekunle, 2025).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to evaluating road maintenance and transportation efficiency in Akure South Local Government Area, Ondo State, focusing solely on the urban transportation infrastructure and related policies.
