Background of the Study:
In recent years, police brutality has emerged as a critical issue in urban centers, with Onitsha South experiencing heightened tensions between law enforcement and residents. The interplay of socio-economic disparities and rapid urbanization has created a fertile ground for abuse of power (Nwankwo, 2023). Incidents of excessive use of force, discriminatory practices, and lack of accountability have raised serious concerns among community stakeholders. This study delves into the historical context of policing in urban Nigeria, critically evaluating how structural deficiencies and inadequate oversight contribute to brutal practices. Modern communication channels have amplified public scrutiny and mobilized calls for reform (Ibrahim, 2024). Research indicates that community trust is eroding, as citizens perceive police actions as politically motivated and unregulated (Obi, 2025). By examining systemic issues and the socio-political environment, this study aims to illuminate the root causes of police brutality. It also evaluates the impact of legislative reforms and community policing initiatives, offering a comprehensive understanding of the phenomenon in an urban milieu. The analysis draws on qualitative and quantitative data to underscore the urgent need for accountability and transparent governance in law enforcement practices.
Statement of the Problem:
Onitsha South’s urban environment has witnessed escalating cases of police brutality, undermining public trust and social stability. The lack of effective oversight and transparent mechanisms has fueled a cycle of abuse and impunity (Okafor, 2023). The problem is compounded by socio-economic inequalities that predispose marginalized groups to harsh policing, leading to a deteriorating relationship between citizens and law enforcement (Uche, 2024). The study seeks to quantify these trends and understand the underlying causes, thereby informing potential reforms.
