Background of the Study

Ile-Ife is renowned as a cradle of cultural heritage in Nigeria, where historical landmarks and traditions play a pivotal role in attracting tourists. The amalgamation of cultural heritage and tourism has the potential to stimulate local economies by generating revenue, promoting small businesses, and creating employment opportunities (Afolabi, 2023). Cultural festivals, traditional art, and ancient artifacts serve as unique selling points that distinguish Ile-Ife as a destination with a rich historical narrative (Balogun, 2024). However, there is a need to evaluate how effectively this cultural capital is leveraged within tourism-related economic activities. Recent studies suggest that while tourism offers economic benefits, challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and limited preservation initiatives may hamper its full potential (Adesanya, 2025). This study will critically examine the interplay between cultural heritage preservation and tourism development, assessing both the economic impact and the challenges inherent in integrating tradition with modern tourism demands. The investigation considers stakeholder involvement, policy frameworks, and market trends to propose strategies that enhance the sustainable utilization of cultural heritage in tourism.

Statement of the Problem

Although Ile-Ife’s rich cultural heritage attracts tourists, the economic benefits derived from tourism are not fully optimized. Poor infrastructure, inconsistent policy implementation, and a lack of coordinated marketing strategies undermine the potential economic impact (Afolabi, 2023). Moreover, conservation challenges and inadequate community involvement limit the effective integration of heritage sites into the tourism economy (Balogun, 2024). This situation calls for a systematic analysis to identify obstacles and opportunities for better leveraging cultural heritage as an economic driver (Adesanya, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

To assess the current utilization of cultural heritage in tourism.

To evaluate its economic impact on Ile-Ife.

To recommend strategies for enhancing cultural tourism.

Research Questions:

How does cultural heritage influence tourism in Ile-Ife?

What are the primary challenges in leveraging cultural heritage for tourism-related economic growth?

What measures can improve the integration of heritage sites into the tourism economy?

Research Hypotheses:

H₁: Cultural heritage significantly enhances tourism-related economic activities.

H₂: Infrastructure and policy challenges negatively affect cultural tourism growth.

H₃: Improved stakeholder engagement leads to enhanced economic benefits from cultural heritage.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it examines the critical role of cultural heritage in driving tourism-related economic activities in Ile-Ife. The findings will guide policymakers and tourism stakeholders in developing strategies that promote sustainable tourism, preserve cultural identity, and boost local economies. The research offers valuable insights for enhancing heritage conservation while maximizing tourism revenue (Afolabi, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to the role of cultural heritage in tourism-related economic activities within Ile-Ife, Ife Central Local Government Area, focusing on local cultural sites and their economic impact without considering broader regional factors.

Definitions of Terms:

Cultural Heritage: Traditions, artifacts, and historical sites that form a community's identity.

Tourism-related Economic Activities: Economic pursuits generated from visitor spending.

Sustainable Tourism: Tourism that preserves cultural and environmental resources for future generations.
