Background of the Study
The perception of witchcraft within contemporary Christianity has emerged as a contentious issue, reflecting broader societal tensions between tradition and modernity. In Aniocha South Local Government Area, Delta State, divergent views on witchcraft have surfaced amid the growth of Pentecostal and evangelical movements. While some Christian groups staunchly reject any association with traditional witchcraft, others adopt a more syncretic approach, integrating local beliefs into their religious practice (Ejiogu, 2023). These varying perspectives contribute to community debates over the legitimacy and relevance of traditional spiritual practices in modern Christian contexts (Obi, 2024). Moreover, the stigma attached to witchcraft influences social cohesion, affecting interpersonal relationships and community trust. As contemporary Christianity evolves, understanding how these perceptions are constructed and maintained is crucial for addressing social conflicts and promoting religious tolerance (Uche, 2025). This study investigates the multifaceted perceptions of witchcraft within contemporary Christianity, considering the historical, cultural, and doctrinal factors that shape these views. The research further examines the impact of such perceptions on community dynamics and the integration of traditional beliefs within modern religious frameworks.

Statement of the Problem
In Aniocha South, conflicting perceptions of witchcraft within contemporary Christianity have led to social discord and marginalization of individuals associated with traditional practices. The polarized views among Christian communities create tension and hinder efforts to foster inclusive religious environments. The lack of a unified stance on the issue complicates community relations and may contribute to discriminatory practices. This study seeks to identify the underlying factors contributing to these divergent perceptions and to propose approaches for reconciling traditional beliefs with modern Christian doctrines (Ejiogu, 2023; Obi, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To examine how witchcraft is perceived within contemporary Christianity.
  2. To identify the cultural and doctrinal factors influencing these perceptions.
  3. To propose strategies for fostering religious tolerance and social cohesion.

Research Questions:

  1. What are the predominant perceptions of witchcraft in contemporary Christian communities?
  2. How do historical and cultural contexts influence these perceptions?
  3. What measures can promote reconciliation between traditional beliefs and modern Christian doctrines?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Perceptions of witchcraft significantly differ within various Christian denominations.
  2. Cultural influences play a critical role in shaping these perceptions.
  3. Educational interventions can reduce stigma and promote tolerance.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it provides a nuanced understanding of the complex perceptions of witchcraft within contemporary Christianity in Aniocha South. The insights will aid religious leaders and policymakers in addressing social discord and promoting a more inclusive, tolerant religious community (Uche, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to examining the perception of witchcraft within contemporary Christianity in Aniocha South Local Government Area, Delta State, excluding other religious or traditional practices.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Witchcraft: Traditional spiritual practices often associated with supernatural powers.
  2. Contemporary Christianity: Modern expressions of the Christian faith that interact with current cultural contexts.
  3. Syncretism: The blending of different religious and cultural beliefs.
