Background of the Study
Religious teachings have long influenced legal and social frameworks, including matters of inheritance rights. In Iseyin Local Government Area, Oyo State, the interplay between religious doctrines and customary inheritance practices shapes how property and wealth are transferred within families. Religious interpretations of scriptural texts provide guidelines that often conflict with contemporary legal standards, creating complexities in inheritance distribution (Adeniran, 2023). This dynamic is particularly pronounced in communities where traditional beliefs and modern legal practices coexist. The adherence to religiously inspired inheritance rules can both preserve cultural heritage and lead to gender disparities or exclusion of certain family members (Ogunyemi, 2024). Furthermore, the evolving socioeconomic context necessitates a critical evaluation of how these teachings align with current societal values and legal norms (Falade, 2025). This study examines the impact of religious teachings on inheritance rights, considering how doctrinal interpretations influence family dynamics, property distribution, and social equity. It also explores potential reforms that reconcile religious traditions with contemporary legal frameworks to ensure fair and inclusive inheritance practices.
Statement of the Problem
In Iseyin, conflicts often arise due to the influence of religious teachings on inheritance rights. Traditional religious interpretations sometimes conflict with statutory laws, leading to disputes over property distribution, particularly disadvantaging women and other marginalized groups. These challenges contribute to social inequity and legal ambiguities. This study aims to identify the extent of these conflicts, examine the impact of religious teachings on inheritance practices, and propose measures to harmonize religious and legal perspectives to achieve equitable outcomes (Adeniran, 2023; Ogunyemi, 2024).
